Excoriated for speaking French in Alberta, mere days after Fête nationale and Canada Day, I wrote this letter to the editor of the Edmonton Journal as a reminder that, as late as 1968, French as the language of instruction in Alberta schools was strictly forbidden. However, thanks to the late Louis Desrochers’ decades of community service and work within the francophone community, both official languages are—and should be—proudly spoken here.
